Approaches to Learning
Approaches to Learning help all children to learn and succeed. Each child is unique and learns in his/her way. We
support the individual ways children learn by planning activities that nurture their curiosity, supports and
increase their abilities and help them find creative solutions to problems through
- Initiative curiosity
- Engagement and persistence
Language is all around us, and nothing supports a child’s language skills like early experiences with speaking and
listening. By engaging children in conversations; exposing them to new words; singing songs; discussing symbols and
their meaning; and encouraging expression of thoughts, feeling, and opinions through words, we lay the foundation for
a child’s later reading success.
- Listening and understanding
- Speaking and communicating
Automatically recognizing the letters of the alphabet is critical and is a predictor of reading success. Nursery
school is the ideal time to work on this critical alphabet recognition. At TMIS we give children opportunities to
identify letters often so they can begin to associate the letters with their shapes, how they appear in our
environment, and eventually their sounds.
Literacy begins by immersing children in literacy-rich environments and fostering a love of language and reading. We
support young children’s emerging literacy skills by planning activities that involve discriminating sounds,
identifying prints, recognizing letters, developing a love of books, writing and appreciating the rhythm of language.

Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, measurements, shapes and their relationship to one another. We
support the development of children’s mathematical skills by creating hands on experiences and by presenting problems
to children that are meaningful and relevant to their developmental level. When maths is presented in a fun and
creative way, teachers provide children with the opportunity to develop abstract reasoning skills learn complex maths
and create solutions to real life problems.
Science is the study of the world and how it works. Children are natural scientists and their curiosity leads them to
seek answers to questions and make connections. By experimenting, making predictions, exploring testing observations
and investigating, children learn about the world they live in.
Creative Arts supports all areas of child development and foster children imagination and creativity. By painting a
colourful picture, singing and dancing, and role-play with their friends, children express their thoughts, ideas and
feelings in new and creative ways.
